O’odham Chiltepin – also known as a’al kokoli pepper – is a very productive chiltepin variety from the Baboquivari Mountains, in the heights of the Tohono O’odham in southern Arizona. O’odham means “people”. It’s the name of a group of Native Americans who reside predominantly in Arizona and the state of Sonora in northern Mexico. The strong-growing plants of this Capsicum annuum v. aviculare develop branches with black stripes. Its small, red berries are very hot and develop a smokey flavor. You can dry the entire pod and then crumble it over your meal.
