Jalapeño Craig’s Grande Chili Seeds

Craig’s Grande earns its name through the substantial build of its pods. Rather than producing a particularly slender jalapeño, the variety develops broad, fleshy peppers with thick walls and plenty of usable flesh. They are normally picked dark green and eventually mature to red, while green pods can sometimes develop an attractive purple blush.

Developed by Redwood City Seeds in the USA, Craig’s Grande belongs to Capsicum annuum and is an open-pollinated variety. At roughly 70 to 75 days from transplanting, it is relatively early for such a large-fruited jalapeño. The plants are sturdy and productive, carrying a generous crop of substantial peppers.

Bite into a fresh pod and the thick, crisp flesh is immediately noticeable. The flavour remains distinctly jalapeño, accompanied by moderate heat. Published figures generally place Craig’s Grande within roughly 2,500 to 8,500 Scoville Heat Units, although heat can vary considerably with maturity and growing conditions.

Those broad, thick-walled pods are particularly useful for stuffing. Craig’s Grande is an excellent choice for jalapeño poppers, filled peppers and grilling, but it is equally at home in salsa, pickles or roasted dishes. Fresh green pods can also simply be sliced wherever the flavour and crunch of jalapeño are wanted.

Craig’s Grande is therefore not simply about producing a longer pepper. Its appeal comes from combining substantial pods and thick walls with early production and the familiar culinary character of a classic jalapeño.
