Purple Jalapeño Chili Seeds

With Purple Jalapeño, the most interesting stage arrives well before full maturity. The young pods begin green, develop a deep violet colour that can appear almost black, and eventually ripen all the way to red. Because individual pods progress at different times, a single plant can carry green, purple and red jalapeños simultaneously.

The plant itself contributes to the display, producing purple to lavender-coloured flowers. Yet beneath the unusual pigmentation, the pods retain the familiar jalapeño shape and substantial, thick walls. They commonly reach approximately 6 to 8 cm in length.

The flavour remains unmistakably jalapeño. Harvested during the purple stage, the pods have the fresh, slightly grassy character associated with the classic pepper together with moderate heat. Figures of around 2,500 to 8,000 Scoville Heat Units are commonly given, although individual pods can vary with genetics, maturity and growing conditions.

The purple stage makes this variety particularly interesting in the kitchen. The pods can be sliced fresh into salsa and salads, pickled, cut into rings or stuffed thanks to their thick walls. Leaving them on the plant until they turn fully red produces a more mature jalapeño with additional sweetness and a different flavour profile.

Purple Jalapeño therefore combines two qualities that do not always meet in a chilli variety: genuine ornamental value and a genuinely useful culinary crop. For growers who already enjoy jalapeños, it offers the familiar character of the pepper in a much less familiar colour.
